All About a Weimaraner

Weimaraners are energetic and active dogs that love to run and play. They love being around their owners and will get very nervous when left alone for to long. Proper socialization and training can help with this.

They can be very difficult to train as they are very independent dogs but with persistence they become a very well trained dog.

They make good watchdogs as they are wary of strangers and will bark loudly when they feel that something is not right.

The exercise requirements of these dogs are high and they make a good match for very active owners that have a lot of time to dedicate to a dog.

Grooming a Weimaraner

Hair type: The short, smooth coat of the Weimaraner is tight to the whole body and comes in shades of mouse-gray to silver-gray, blending with darker shades on the body and lighter shades on the head and ears. It also comes in a rarer longhaired variety. This breed does not have an undercoat, so extreme cold should be avoided.

Daily coat care: The smooth, short-haired coat is easy to keep in peak condition. Brush with a firm bristle brush, and dry shampoo occasionally. Bathe in mild soap only when necessary. A rub over with a chamois will make the coat gleam. Inspect the feet and mouth for damage after work or exercise sessions. Keep the nails trimmed. This breed is an average shedder.

Recommended groom frequency: Your Weimaraner should receive a professional grooming every 8-12 weeks but may require more regular visits for nail trims.

A full dog groom at Petmania Grooming Studios will include - Full wash, dry, nail clip, ear clean & pluck, breed standard hair cut and conditioning spray.

Diet

Depending on the size and age of your Weimaraner, you will need to feed between 275g and 362g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Our pet advisors in-store can help you find the most appropriate food for your dog, while you can find out more about the different dog food brands we stock here.

Activity Level

These are powerful working dogs with great stamina. They need to be taken for a daily, long walk or jog. In addition, they need plenty of opportunities to run free. Do not exercise them after meals. It is best to feed a dog after a long walk, as soon as it cools down.

Where to get a Weimaraner

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100's of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
