All About a Miniature Poodle

The Miniature Poodle is an active, adorable, alert and highly responsive family dog. A very intelligent dog, the Miniature Poodle is easy to train and gets along well with other dogs and children.

It makes for a good watchdog as it does not take easily to strangers and will bark a lot if it feels suspicion. It does require a lot of human attention and needs to active on a constant basis as it can become bored very quickly.

Grooming a Miniature Poodle

Hair type: The coat of the Miniature Poodle should be of a naturally curly texture and dense throughout. Poodles have a single layer coat composed of dense curly fur and comes in all solid colours including black, blue, silver, gray, cream, apricot, red, white, brown or café au lait.

Daily coat care: The Poodle does shed some hair but instead of the fur coming off the dog it becomes tangled in the surrounding hair. This can lead to matting without proper care. There are several different types of clips for poodles but the most common is the easy care cut called the “puppy cut” where the coat is cut short all over the body.

Recommended groom frequency: A Miniature Poodle has a relatively easy coat to care for in comparison to most dog breeds but a poodle owner can anticipate a professional grooming every 4-6 weeks.

A full dog groom at Petmania Grooming Studios will include - Full wash, dry, nail clip, ear clean & pluck, breed standard hair cut and conditioning spray.

Diet

Depending on the size and age of your Miniature Poodle, you will need to feed between 103g and 135g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Our pet advisors in-store can help you find the most appropriate food for your dog, while you can find out more about the different dog food brands we stock here.

Activity Level

Miniature Poodles need a daily walk. They will also enjoy a good romp in a safe, open area off lead, such as a large, fenced-in yard. They adore water and love sessions of play. They are a very versatile breed with a hunting and retrieving instinct.

Where to get a Miniature Poodle

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100's of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
