Feeders, Nestboxes & Tables
Bird Tables & Hanging Feeders:
The manner in which you provide access to food, and the variety of food that you make available, will influence the variety of species that visit your garden. Hanging feeders are perfect for feeding seeds, peanut and seed blends for agile birds like Blue Tits, Green-finches and House Sparrow, while other species such as Robins or Chaffinches are known to prefer to eat from a table.
Choose a range of feeders which will be easy to clean and allow you to put out a selection of food.
Water Baths:
For birds, particularly those that eat lots of seeds, need access to fresh drinking water, so a bird bath is a great way to help them out.
Bathing is also hugely important to keep birds feathers healthy so ongoing access to a clean water bath will provide them with a much needed bathing location and a hugely entertaining addition to your garden for you! Protect your bathing birds from predators by locating your bird bath at least 2 meters from cover.
Nest Boxes:
Give your garden birds a space to call home in your garden, by installing nest boxes. The size of the hole in your nest box will determine the species that it attracts, as they will replicate the natural environment in which they will choose to build their nest. Nest boxes should be installed before breeding season (which starts in February), to allow birds plenty of time to find them, and choose them as their home.
Position your nest box between 1.5m and 5.5m from the ground (higher if there are lots of cats about), avoiding prevailing winds and strong sunlight. Positions close to climbing plants or vegetation will provide much need cover.
