Choosing a Collar for your Cat

It can be tricky finding a collar for your cat, especially for adult cats who may never have worn a collar before. If your cat is an outdoor feline who loves to explore, it’s important to give them a collar and ID tag should they ever go missing. Even if your cat primarily stays indoors, if they ever do accidentally wander off, someone may think your cat is a stray and take her to a rescue shelter. With an ID collar, your cat has a better chance of getting home safely and quickly.

In this blog post, we’ll show you how to measure a collar for your cat, the types of collars available, and our top recommendations.

Does My Cat Need a Collar?

There are many reasons why your cat should be wearing a collar such as:

  1. Identification

It’s no secret cats love to wander and explore, and should your cat venture too far beyond their home, their ID tag on their collar will quickly let anyone know they are not a stray and have a home.

  1. Increases Visibility

If you cat is a night explorer, consider getting a reflective collar for them. This collar will allow motorists and other people to see your cat from a distance, preventing potential accidents. Some reflective collars available are

  1. Reducing Hunting

Dead birds and mice turning up at your doorstep every so often? Attaching a bell to your cat’s collar can reduce the number of birds she catches. It may not prevent dead wildlife turning up on your front porch completely, but it is certainly an option.

Measuring a Collar for your Cat

You can measure your cat’s neck with a measuring tape and making note of where the ends meet. If you don’t have a measuring tape, get a piece of ribbon or string; wrap this around the circumference of their neck and then check the size against a ruler. Make sure it’s wrapped snugly (not tightly!) around her neck.

Once you’ve gotten the right measurements, convert them into centimetres or inches in case you are looking at collars with alternative measurements. It’s now time to go shopping for a cat collar!

Types of Collars

  • Breakaway Collars

Breakaway collars are highly recommended as they are designed to break open if your cat gets hooked on something. They can help prevent injury in your cat as they can get out as opposed to being stuck, vulnerable and potentially harm themselves.  Some of our breakaway collars include LAZERBRITE Reflective Adjustable Breakaway Cat Collar and SAFE CAT Snag-Proof Breakaway Collar

  • Reflective Collars

Reflective collars such as LAZERBRITE Reflective Adjustable Breakaway Cat Collar features reflective material visible up to 600 feet away, sure to be seen by oncoming motorists for cat safety, preventing any potential accidents.

Is It a Good Fit?

The most important thing is to make sure the collar fits your cat comfortably. Just like dogs, there are lots of various breeds of cat ranging from small to large who will have different requirements when it comes to collar fit. Kittens have smaller necks than adult cats so will require smaller collars. Always measure your cat as best you can when taking her to get a collar fitted.
