All about the Affenpinscher
The Affenpinscher is a small, friendly dog with a terrier-like personality.
If you choose to get an affenpinscher you can expect that they will typically get along well with other dogs and pets; particularly when raised together. So, it is recommended that they are socalised with other animals from a young age.
Your Affenpinscher is likely to be a lively, sharp-witted little dog that is courageous and confident; although they can be bold, inquisitive and stubborn and need to be entertained. Company and play is essential or they may become mischievous. This friendly little dog will enjoy being with their family.
Grooming an Affenpinscher
Hair type: The Affenpinscher is a small dog with a shaggy, wiry-type coat. The hair on their face is longer than the rest of the body giving their distinct look. The coat is usually black or dark grey; but it can also come in lighter grey, silver, red, black or tan. Their undercoat will be slightly curly.
Daily coat care: Your Affenpinscher’s harsh coat should never be clipped short because this ruins the coat for many years. It should be brushed and combed weekly and it may be necessary to pluck it (hand-stripping). Hair sometimes grows in the corners of the eyes, causing irritation and they should be dealt with promptly. This breed sheds little to no hair and are great for allergy sufferers.
Recommended groom frequency: Affenpinschers are a dog breed that can require a lot of professional grooming as they can have problems with their coat. They should be seen by a professional groomer once every month or so.

Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Affenpinscher; you will need to feed between 24g and 88g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. Keep your Affenpinscher trim by measuring its food and feeding it twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time.

Activity Level
Your Affenpinscher will need a good daily walk to ensure that it is mentally and physically exercised. Play will take care of a lot of their exercise needs, but as with all breeds; play will not fulfill its need for a daily walk. Dogs that do not get to go on daily walks are more likely to display behavioural problems. Affenpinschers will also enjoy a good play in a safe open area off lead, such as a large fenced-in yard.
Where to get an Affenpinscher
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you; we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers. This will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
