All about the Cavalier King Charles
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an intelligent, lively breed and very popular in Ireland. Good with kids, dogs as well as other pets, they have a lively nature makes it an excellent companion breed.
A people pleaser, they are very easy to train although they are prone to developing ‘Small Dog Syndrome’ if strong leadership is not shown by their owner.
Ever friendly, the Cavalier King Charles loves human contact and will have a generally welcoming demeanour towards strangers – making the Cavalier not a great watchdog, but a wonderful companion dog. Due to their need for human contact, the Cavalier is not really suited for families which remain away from home for long hours.
Grooming a Cavalier King Charles
Hair type: They have a silky coat of medium length which feathers around the ears, chest, legs and tail. Prone to tangling and matting, they are also known to shed substantially.
Daily coat care: Your dog will need to be brushed daily using a firm bristle comb or brush. Particular attention should be paid to the ears which are particularly prone to matting.
Recommended groom frequency: A Cavalier King Charles will need to be fully groomed every six weeks. Mid-groom hair trims, particularly around the feet pads where hair grows quickly may also be needed, as may an ear clean.

Diet
The Cavalier King Charles is genetically prone to a number of diet related disorders such as weight gain and mitral valve disease, so it is recommended that you choose a dog food which has been specifically designed to help strengthen your Cavalier’s resistance to these illnesses.

Activity Level
This breed needs moderate amount of regular exercise and they are prone to weight gain. A daily walk is essential while free play in an open and secured area every now and then is also recommended. It tends to gain weight easily so should not be overfed.
Where to get a Cavalier King Charles
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
