All about the Clumber Spaniel

The Clumber Spaniel is an easy-going hunting breed. It is excellent with children although caution is advised with smaller pets such as cats and birds as the Clumber Spaniel has an innate tendency to hunt.

This breed is a people pleaser which makes it easy to train, however, it does not respond very well to harsh discipline so a calm and consistent approach is required to train this breed.

The Clumber Spaniel can be reserved with strangers and thus, it makes for a good watchdog.

Grooming a Clumber Spaniel

Hair type: The coat of the Clumber Spaniel is dense, weather-resistant, straight, and flat with feathering around the ears, belly and legs. Clumbers are predominantly white in colour with lemon, brown, or orange markings around the eyes, and at the base of the tail.

Daily coat care: The coat must be groomed regularly with a pin brush and a regular comb. This breed is prone to ear and eye infection so regular cleaning is essential and may be needed between grooms. This breed is a heavy shedder.

Recommended groom frequency: This breed is a seriously heavy shedder and professional grooming can help control the amount of shedding that occurs. It should receive a professional groom every month or so while intermittent ear cleans and hair trims may be needed.

At Petmania Grooming Studios we have a full range of treatments available for your Clumber Spaniel. If you get puppy, we recommend our Puppy’s First Visit at around four months, once your puppy has received all his vaccinations.

Diet

Depending on the size of your Clumber Spaniel, you will need to feed it between 320g and 422g of high quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. Clumber Spaniels are prone to developing food allergies, so particular attention to any signs of a reaction to their food. They are also known to gain weight easily so choose a food that offers a nutritiously balanced diet and limit the availability of treats.

Our pet advisors in-store can help you find the most appropriate food for your dog, while you can find out more about the different dog food brands we stock here.

Activity Level

This is an active dog which needs daily exercise. Daily long walks are vital to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. These should be supplemented with jogging or running every now and then in an open but secured area. However, it should not be let off the leash in an open area as it has a tendency to chase small animals.

Where to get a Clumber Spaniel

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
