All about the Dachshund
The Dachshund – also known as a sausage dog, is an affectionate, proud and loyal breed of dog which will be devoted to its family.
Curious, clever and lively, they are one of the breeds of dogs that are more difficult to train / house train, but it’s not impossible and will take patience and a firm stance.
Devoted to its family, it can be difficult to train and housebreak. The Dachshund packs a whole lot of personality into a tiny little body. Like many small dog breeds, Dachshunds will bark to try and intimidate other dogs, but rarely follow through.
Filled with personality, these small dogs love attention and are happy to steal the limelight, making them less suitable for families with small children than some other dog breeds. They are however wonderful companion dogs.
Grooming a Dachshund
Hair type: Dachshunds exhibit three coat varieties, smooth coat, long hair and wire hair. They have a wide variety of colours and patterns. The short-haired Dachshund’s coat should be shiny, sleek and uniform.
Daily coat care: Long-haired Dachshunds require daily combing and brushing. Wirehaired need professional trimming twice a year and short haired require regular rub downs with a damp cloth. This breed is an average shedder.
Recommended groom frequency: Dachshunds grooming depends very much on their coat type. The smooth coat should receive a professional grooming every 2 months or so and the long haired every 6-8 weeks.

Diet
Like many small dogs, the Dachshund is prone to weight gain which can cause a variety of weight related illnesses and back problems. For this reason, a carefully balanced diet is recommended and choosing a food which has a higher levels of Omega oils and glucosamine can help keep the unique stature of your Dachshund’s joints and back supple.

Activity Level
These are active dogs with surprising stamina; they need to be walked daily. They will also enjoy sessions of play in the park or other safe, open areas. Be careful, however, when pedestrians are about because Dachshunds are more likely to be stepped on than more visible dogs, due to their unique stature.
Your Dachshund should be discouraged from jumping, as they are prone to spinal damage due to their long back, so choose your play time games carefully.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
