All about the Fox Terrier

The Fox Terrier is a brave and bold terrier whose cheerful and loveable character makes them great with children. Extremely affectionate and devoted your dog will be very loyal to its family and will really enjoy spending time with it human family.

A natural hunter, care should be taken around smaller pets and animals and the Fox Terrier has been known to hunt! Likewise, these dogs like to go exploring so it is important to keep them in a secure enclosed space, and when out and about, keep them on their lease.

If your dog is properly socialized and introduced it can get along just fine with other dogs. Very intelligent, it can be taught to perform tricks.

Grooming a Fox Terrier

Hair type: There are two types of Fox Terrier, smooth and wire haired. The smooth type has a short, hard coat which is predominantly white. The wire haired type has a hard and crisp double coat with a coarse texture underneath. It should be so dense that the skin cannot be seen or felt. The individual hairs should twist but are curly.

Daily coat care: The smooth fox terrier is basically a low maintenance dog in terms of grooming. Hair grows all over the entire body equally and weekly brushing is needed with a wire slicker brush of medium strength. A wire haired fox terrier needs brushing weekly with a firm bristle brush and bathing only when necessary.

Recommended groom frequency: Smooth breeds need less grooming than the wire haired breeds. The smooth fox terrier only requires professional grooming at the discretion of the owner, although regular nail clips and ear cleans are recommended. The wire haired dogs should be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks.

At Petmania Grooming Studios we have a full range of treatments available for your Fox Terrier. If you get puppy, we recommend our Puppy’s First Visit at around four months, once your puppy has received all his vaccinations.

Diet

Recommended daily amount: 1.5 to 2 cups of a high-quality dog food daily, divided into two meals.

Our pet advisors in-store can help you find the most appropriate food for your dog, while you can find out more about the different dog food brands we stock here.

Activity Level

The Fox Terrier is a very lively and active breed needing a daily, long walk or jog. If it is possible, these dogs will love to run free in a safe area, but they will go explore if they can get out, so a secure enclosure is essential.

A relatively dominant, very high-energy dog that can become stressed and frustrated without the proper type and amount of exercise, both mental and physical, so in addition to daily walks / runs, your Fox Terrier will need lots of interactive place to stimulate his mind and body.

Where to get a Fox Terrier

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
