All about the Husky
The Siberian Husky is a docile and a slightly mischievous breed. It is excellent with kids as well as other dogs and pets. This dog makes for an excellent companion breed.
Siberian Huskies can be slightly difficult to train and a consistent approach is needed when training this breed. It is a working dog and needs to be kept occupied most of the time.
This breed is not recommended for beginners or for families who cannot afford enough time for the dog.
Grooming a Husky
Hair type: Huskies, like all Nordic breeds have a double coat. A soft undercoat and an outer coat known as guard hairs. The double coat insulates them from heat and cold which is why they should never be shaved, even in the hottest climates. Coat colours include all from black to pure white, with or without markings on the head.
Daily coat care: Despite their appearance, Huskies are a relatively easy dog to groom and maintain. The coat sheds heavily twice a year and during that time they need to be brushed and combed daily. Bathing with warm water during shedding periods will loosen up the undercoat.
Recommended groom frequency: Huskies should be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks and may require more frequent grooming during shedding periods.

Diet
Depending on the size of your Husky, you will need to feed it between 250g and 329g of high quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. Typically, a Siberian Husky will stop eating when it’s full (unlike some other breeds) and generally do not gain weight – although if your Siberian does gain weight s/he will find it difficult to loose and it may result in weight related illness.

Activity Level
This is an active breed which needs lot of daily exercise. Daily walks should be supplemented with jogging or running in an open fenced area. However, too much exercise should be avoided in warm weather because of the breed’s very thick coat. It is sensitive to warm climate so should be adequately protected.
Where to get a Husky
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
