All about the Lakeland Terrier
The Lakeland Terrier is an alert and cheerful breed. With proper training it can do with kids as well as other dogs. However, caution is advised around smaller pets such as birds, rats, rabbits, cats etc. as it has a natural tendency to chase small animals.
Socializing at an early age is required to bring out the best behaviour. This breed is slightly reserved with strangers and has a tendency to bark, which makes it a good watchdog.
Although it is an obedient breed, it can be a slow learner at times. A consistent approach is needed to train this breed. The training methods should incorporate a lot of variety as it can get bored easily.
Grooming a Lakeland Terrier
Hair type: The Lakeland Terrier has a double coat. The outer coat is hard and wiry in texture and the undercoat is close to the skin and soft. The hair is usually cut so it is longer on the muzzle and legs. Coat colours come in solid blue, black, liver, red and wheaten. It also comes with saddle markings, where a second colour covers the back of the neck, back, sides and up the tail.
Daily coat care: The Lakeland Terrier has a coat that is relatively easy to care for in comparison to some other terrier breeds. It requires little maintenance. However, the Lakeland Terrier should have its coat hand stripped two or three times each year by pulling the old hair out by hand. Remove loose hair also from the ear passages and trim excess hair between the pads of the feet.
Recommended groom frequency: Lakeland Terriers should receive a professional groom every 6-8 weeks, sometimes it may require more frequent grooming with particular attention being paid to its ears and feet pads.

Diet
Depending on the age, size and activity level of your Lakeland Terrier, you will need to feed it between 150g – 200g of good quality dry food a day, split across two feeding times.
Choose a food that offers an well balanced nutrient content and restrict availability of treats to prevent weight gain.

Activity Level
This breed requires moderate exercise. Daily long walks are recommended for physical as well as metal well being of the breed. The walks should be supplemented with jogging or running in a fenced area. When out in the open, this dog should not be let off the leash as it has a tendency to chase smaller animals. The Lakeland Terrier is good for apartment life although it will be very active indoors.
