All about the Old English Sheepdog
The Old English Sheepdog is relaxed and almost comes across as care free sometimes. It is an intelligent, loyal and friendly companion dog that will adjust well to its surroundings and will be at home in all conditions.
This breed loves children and will often thrive when allowed to freely play amongst its family. They do need to be taught a few rules when young as they have a tendency to herd and will try to herd humans by bumping in to them.
Grooming a Old English Sheepdog
Hair type: The Old English Sheepdog has a shaggy, double coat that is long and profuse with a good hard textured outer coat and a soft waterproof undercoat. Coat colours include gray, grizzle, blue, blue gray, blue merle, gray with white markings or white with gray markings.
Daily coat care: The coarse longhaired coat needs constant care to keep it in top condition. Unless it is combed and brushed right through to the dense waterproof undercoat at least 3 times per week it will become matted and the dog may develop skin conditions making it prone to parasites. This breed sheds constantly but mostly in small amounts.
Recommended groom frequency: Old English Sheepdogs should be seen by a professional groomer every 6-8 weeks.

Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Old English Sheepdog, you will need to feed between 350g and 461g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Activity Level
These dogs need a lot of open space if they are to run around freely and fulfil their exercise needs. These dogs have a good tolerance for walking and even running, but keep in mind that you’re taking your Old English Sheep Dog for a walk and it’s not taking you!
Where to get an Old English Sheepdog
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
