All about the Parson Russell Terrier

The Parson Russell Terrier is a happy and devoted little dog. They are obedient yet totally fearless in the face of danger. This breed loves to play and fool around and are generally good with older children.

As with all terriers, they are intelligent and will quickly learn what they can get away with. They have strong hunting instincts and should not be trusted with other small animals. Parsons need plenty of exercise both mentally and physically and can become destructive if they don’t get it.

Grooming a Parson Russell Terrier

Hair type: Parson Russell Terriers have a harsh double coat that can be rough, broken or smooth. The coat colour is predominantly white with black, tan or grizzle markings or a tricolour combination.

Daily coat care: All coat types are easy to groom. Comb and brush regularly with a firm bristle brush, and bathe only when necessary. A Parson Terrier will need to have its coat hand stripped a couple of times a year.

Recommended groom frequency: Your Parson Terrier should receive a professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.

At Petmania Grooming Studios we have a full range of treatments available for your Parson Russell Terrier. If you get puppy, we recommend our Puppy’s First Visit at around four months, once your puppy has received all his vaccinations.

Diet

Like many terriers, the Parson Russell Terrier has a healthy appetite and is prone to weight gain due to over eating. For this reason, choose a well balanced nutritious food and feed treats as treats as not every day.

Depending on the size and age of your Parson Russell Terrier, you will need to feed between 92g and 121g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Our pet advisors in-store can help you find the most appropriate food for your dog, while you can find out more about the different dog food brands we stock here.

Activity Level

The Parson Russell Terrier is a pleasant companion when it is sufficiently exercised but can become a troublesome if not properly exercised. She will need a long, daily, brisk walk and they will also love to be let free in a big open area where they can run freely. If the Parson is left alone during the day, be it in an apartment or a house, it should be well exercised before the human leaves for work by taking it on a long pack walk or jog, and then taken out again when returning home.

Where to get a Parson Russell Terrier

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
