All about the Pekingese
The Pekingese is a brave and totally devoted little dog to its master. They are beautiful dogs that make the best of companions for any dog owner.
The Pekingese may be difficult to housebreak and can become wary of strangers, and may become untrustworthy with children and even adults.
They can become extremely dominant minded towards other, bigger dogs and can sometimes show this trait to their owners. This dominant trait needs to be treated at an early age where the dog is shown what is acceptable and what is not.
Grooming a Pekingese
Hair type: The Pekingese breed of dog has a double coat – the outer coat is long and coarse in texture with profuse feathering, the undercoat is soft and thick. The coat comes in all colours, sometimes with a black mask.
Daily coat care: Daily combing and brushing of the very long double coat with a slicker brush and a natural bristle brush is essential. Take extra care around the hindquarters which can become solid and matted. Females shed the undercoat when in season. Dry shampoo regularly. Clean the face and eyes daily and check the hairy feet for burrs and objects that can stick there. These dogs are average shedders.
Recommended groom frequency: Pekingese dogs should receive a professional grooming every 4-6 weeks at least.

Diet
A little dog with a big appetite, the Pekingese is prone to weight gain which can lead to related health problems like joint injuries or back problems. For this reason, careful management of your Pekingese’s diet is important and it is recommended that you choose a good quality dry food that offers a well balanced nutrient content.
Depending on the size and age of your Pekingese, you will need to feed between 80g and 105g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals, while treats should be restricted.

Activity Level
A Pekingese will need a daily walk, as well as regular interactive play, to maintain both their general health, and prevent destructive behaviour. They will also enjoy a good romp in a safe, open area off lead, such as a large, fenced-in yard. It is recommended that you familiarise your Pekingese to its leash when it is still a puppy.
Where to get a Pekingese
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
