All about the Samoyed
This easy going, gentle and playful Samoyed dog is a great family companion that will love everyone. It is a terrible watchdog as it will gladly try to be friends with everyone.
It will get along well with children and when socialised from a young age it will be fine with other pets. Samoyeds are highly intelligent, and will respond to firm, patient training, which should be started at an early age.
When this dogs physical and mental needs are met it will turn into a great family dog that is devoted and sociable. It never seeks trouble but will defend itself or its family. These dogs have a reputation of being chewers.
Grooming a Samoyed
Hair type: Samoyeds have a thick double coat that is profuse. The undercoat is soft, short and thick with longer hairs growing out to the outer coat. The outer coat is harsh and stands straight out but is not wavy. Males are more profuse than females. There is a ruff around the neck and shoulders that frames the head.
Daily coat care: Extensive grooming is needed with Samoyeds. Brush with a long tooth brush and a medium tooth comb. They are seasonal heavy shedders and the fluffy double coat needs frequent brushing but tends to stay white without constant bathing.
Recommended groom frequency: Maintaining a Samoyeds coat can be daunting and is better preformed by a professional. They should receive a professional grooming at least every 4-6 weeks.

Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Samoyed, you will need to feed between 305g and 402g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Activity Level
A Samoyed needs a reasonable amount of exercise, including a daily walk or jog. Take it easy during warm weather because the woolly undercoat inhibits loss of the heat built up during exercise.
Where to get a Samoyed
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
