All about the Siberian Husky
The Siberian Husky is an active breed that loves to have fun with the family and make great companions for any dog owner. They make good watch dogs and will bark when they feel that something is not right.
This breed tolerates strangers, but will sometimes be reserved and aloof.
They can however be extremely stubborn and difficult to train as well as having a huge fitness level. It is important that the yard they play in safely fenced as this breed is known for escaping and running away.
They are also diggers and will dig large holes in the yard in an attempt to amuse themselves. Huskies are generally okay with other dogs, but they have very high prey drives and should not be trusted with small housepets like cats.
Grooming a Siberian Husky
Hair type: The Siberian Husky’s coat is thicker than most other dog breeds, comprising two layers. A dense undercoat and a longer topcoat of short, straight guard hairs. It is designed to protect the dog against harsh Arctic winters but also reflects heat in the summer. The undercoat is often absent during shedding. The most common coats are black and white but there are other varieties of coat colours.
Daily coat care: Siberian Huskys should be brushed twice a week with a slicker brush, followed by combing with a coarse or medium steel comb. Huskies are extremely dense so its important to remove any shed hair from the undercoat and topcoat.
Recommended groom frequency: Your Siberian Husky should be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks.

Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Siberian Husky, you will need to feed between 267g and 351g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Activity Level
They are not usually recommended for apartments, however they can live in apartments if well trained and properly exercised. Siberian Huskies are very active indoors and do best with a fenced-in large yard. Because of their heavy coats, these dogs prefer cool climates.
Where to get a Siberian Husky
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
