GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR CLICKER

1. You will need some reward treats for your dog during training sessions. Treats should be small but tasty and taken from your dog’s daily food allowance.
2. Choose a quiet place with no distractions for training sessions.
3. For your dog to associate the click sound with a reward, you must first ‘charge the clicker.’
4. To do this, click and immediately give your dog a treat.
5. Do not click and reward at the same time; the treat must follow the click.
6. Repeat this until your dog becomes alert to the sound and starts the expect a treat from you.
7. In the early stages (even if you click by accident) you should reward your dog.

SIT

1. Hold a treat just above your dogs nose, and slowly move it back over his head. His bottom should go to the floor. If he jumps up you have the treat too high.
2. As he sits, Click and Treat.
3. Repeat and when consistent add your command ‘sit,’ gradually removing the use of your hand signal.

DOWN

1. Start with your dog in a sit.
2. Holding a treat, move it down from his nose to between his front paws. He should slide into a down position. It may take a few attempts.
3. Click and Treat.
4. Repeat and when consistent add your command ‘down,’ gradually removing the use of your hand signal.
