Where Do Cats Like To Sleep? A Guide To Your Kitty’s Sleeping Habits

Whether it’s in their bed, behind the sofa, or on the window sill—cats have the ability to settle down and go to sleep almost anywhere. They can snooze for up to 15 hours a day, so where they decide to sleep is important. But where exactly is the best place for them to catch some z’s?

In this blog post, we’ll explain why your cat chooses a certain place to sleep, how to choose a cat bed and what to do if your cat isn’t sleeping where she should!

Why is My Cat Sleeping There?

There are many different reasons why a cat may choose to sleep in a certain area, such as;

1. Their favourite human

If you share a special bond with your cat (as most cat parents would!), they will feel more comfortable to cuddle up to you and fall asleep. This bond is important to your cat as they are social creatures that will look for affection and lots of attention from their owner. By sleeping with you or next to you, it is another way for them to show that they love you!

2. Small spaces

Finding your cat falling asleep in your delivery boxes? Your cat has the need to feel protected, derived from their instinct of hunting; because cardboard boxes are enclosed on all sides, they only have one entry point to keep an eye on, therefore reducing their vulnerability.

3. The warmest spot

Who doesn’t love a warm, cosy spot to snuggle up to? A small spot of sunshine creeping in through the window, a soft spot next to the radiator or their favourite human’s bed, cats will seek out warmth when choosing a spot to fall asleep.

4. Somewhere High

According to experts, cats like to sleep somewhere elevated due to their instinct to protect themselves. A high position for sleeping or resting gives them a good eye for spotting any potential dangers around them. This instinct derives from their ancestry.

How to Choose a Cat Bed

When picking out a bed for your kitty, there are certain things you need to consider, such as:

  • Size: Is the bed big enough for your cat to not only sleep in, but stretch out her legs and get comfy in too? Bear in mind the size of your cat when bed shopping and, if she’s a kitten, know that she will most likely outgrow her current bed in the future.
  • Comfort: Of course you want your cat’s bed to be comfy, but if she’s not getting the desired comfort levels she wants, she will seek it somewhere else—somewhere you may not want, like the clothes basket or on the back of your sofa! Look to provide a cosy home, not just a box for your cat.
  • Washability: Cat beds can get covered in things brought in from the outside, like fleas, dirt and bacteria. Even if your cat doesn’t venture much outdoors, there will still be fur lying around the place. As a result, you will need to occasionally be able to wash the bed. Select a bed that has a removable and washable cover. In some cases you will even need to put the whole bed into the washing machine.
  • Design: While your kitty may not care one lick about the curb appeal of her bed, you probably do. Try to coordinate her bed with the interior design of your home to make it ‘fit in.’ There are many fashionable options to choose from in a wide range of colours and styles, all washable and designed for easy maintenance. Your cat’s bed will fit right in with any home décor.

Why Isn’t My Cat Sleeping In Her Bed?

Cat not taking to her bed? Why not try leaving something there that she will like, such as a toy or a piece of cloth that smells like her? She may also like a piece of clothing that smells like you, particularly if you ever find her resting on any clothes left on your bed or in a wash basket. You can also add in some small treats in the bed for your cat to find, or her favourite toy.
