5 Best Places to Walk Your Dog In Mayo
This month for Operation TransPAWmation, we’re shining a light on all the different ways you can have fun and get out and exercise with your furry friend. Regular exercise is essential to help keep our dogs from gaining excessive weight, and to ensure their overall physical and mental health remains intact. Getting out and about helps keep the brain active, is a great stress reliever and boredom buster; both for dogs and humans!
Check out our blog post below on the best walking trails both you and your dog can avail of in County Mayo.
1.Wild Nephin National Park
Wild Nephin National Park is Ireland’s sixth National Park and can be found along the Western seaboard in northwest Mayo. Covering a vast unspoiled and uninhabited 15,000 hectares, there is plenty to see and do here with your dog beside your side. Wild Nephin National Park is a spectacular place to experience some of the most remote lands in Ireland. While the main body of the park is suitable for the more experienced hillwalkers, there are also easier walks that allow visitors of a range of abilities to enjoy the scenery and wildlife at Wild Nephin.
2. Westport House Loop
The Westport House Loop is a beautiful 3.5k trail through Westport House estate, sure to get the tails wagging. Walkers can start from any of three points – from the historic house itself, from the Hotel Westport Bridge entrance, or from the estate’s Quay entrance. Whichever you choose, you will quickly find yourself immersed in a landscape that is both historic and beautiful. Have your camera ready to take paw-tastic pictures with the beautiful Westport House as the backdrop. Ensure your dog is on a leash as there is lots of wildlife around.
3. Ard Na Gaoithe, Forest Recreational Park
The lands were formally part of the Ashford Estate which were owned by the Guinness family until 1939. This is an interesting site which combines scenic walks and historic buildings. It is a gorgeous place to take your dog for regular walks and even some swimming during the summer months. A section of the trail is along the shores of Lough Corrib, with its many beautiful islands, so an ideal opportunity for the entire family.
4. Tourmakeady Falls
This trail is an excellent option for you and your four legged friend to enjoy. The trail is well maintained and flat the majority of the way, making it easy for dogs and humans of all walking abilities. It provides great scenery through the enchanting forest, and ends at the beautiful Tourmakeady Falls. There are some picnic benches on site to relax and enjoy some refreshments.
5. Old Railway Loop
Just a stone’s throw away from Petmania Westport, be sure to explore this beautiful tree-lined trail with your dog on a sunny day. This lovely walk takes you along a 2.5km walking and cycling trail, and follows part of the old Midland Great Western Railway which dates back to 1875. Perfect for morning strolls or afternoon walks with the family.
What is Operation TransPAWmation?
Petmania’s Operation TransPAWmation began in 2017 to highlight the rise in overweight dogs in Ireland. Since then we have extended the campaign to a whole-health campaign for dogs and cats, helping 1000’s of pet owners get to grips with their pet’s overall health and wellbeing.
Now in its 7th Year, Operation TransPAWmation is designed to help dog and cat owners identify and make small changes that can help improve their pet’s overall health and wellbeing.
For in-person support on your #PetmaniaOT journey, you can also drop into any one of our pet shops nationwide and speak with a member of our team.
