5 Best Places to Walk Your Dog In Meath

This month for Operation TransPAWmation, we’re shining a light on all the different ways you can have fun and get out and exercise with your furry friend. Regular exercise is essential to help keep our dogs from gaining excessive weight, and to ensure their overall physical and mental health remains intact. Getting out and about helps keep the brain active, is a great stress reliever and boredom buster; both for dogs and humans!

Check out our blog post below on the best walking trails both you and your dog can avail of in County Meath.

1.Girley Eco Bog Walk

Starting near Drewston Woods near Kells on the Mullingar Road, this looped walk is perfect for an early morning ramble with your dog. One of only a handful of bogs in Europe due to its raised nature, it is a site of considerable conservation significance. You will be taken through a variety of environments, including woodland, and scrub which grows as a result of peat cutting. There is an abundance of wildlife and wildflowers in the area so be sure to keep an eye out. It is a bog after all so some sections of the trail are fairly muddy so bring wellies and a towel to dry your dog off if they’re prone to taking some spontaneous mud baths.

2. Loughcrew Gardens

Visit Loughcrew Estate’s historic dog-friendly gardens and spend a day sauntering through a varied, peaceful landscape with your furry friend. The central area of approximately six acres includes a lime avenue, extensive lawns and terraces, a magnificent herbaceous border and physic border. Young children are sure to love the mystical Fairy Trail while gardeners enjoy exploring the stunning array of trees and plants which can be found in the area. There is a small charge applicable to visit Loughcrew Gardens, but it is worth it as it’s a lovely place to explore with your pooch.

3. Porchfield Loop

Explore this 3.5-km loop trail near Trim, County Meath. Enjoy this wonderful walk in beautiful County Meath. It’s an easy trail with plenty of history and of course the roaring River Boyne. You will find old ruins along the way, making it ideal for history buffs, as well as a brilliant view of Trim Castle. It’s not a route that is too difficult, and is suitable for most abilities, so a wonderful opportunity to get and explore with your dog.

4. Balrath Woods

Located off the N2 between Slane and Dublin, the mixed broadleaf trees of Balrath Woods make for a lovely, peaceful walk. The 50 acre sites boasts and array of flora and fauna, making it a great spot for European plant and tree identification. There are three different colour-coded walks at Balrath. The Long Walk, which circles the woods’ perimeter, will take around 30-minutes and has a assortment of terrains. The Nature Walk follows the beginning of the Long Walk but turns off after halfway, and takes approximately 20 minutes. The Easy Walk is ideal for those with buggies, older dogs or mobility issues as it is linear, level, and passes accessible playgrounds.

5. Boyne Ramparts Walk

Explore the myth and legend with your dog along the River Boyne on this beautiful trail. While the walk does showcase some historic stonework and ruins, the path is mostly along the river’s edge. With an array of different animals and plant species to spot, breathe in the fresh air as you discover the wonders of nature and history. Trace the footsteps of those who’ve explored before you with his wonderous walk.

What is Operation TransPAWmation?

Petmania’s Operation TransPAWmation began in 2017 to highlight the rise in overweight dogs in Ireland. Since then we have extended the campaign to a whole-health campaign for dogs and cats, helping 1000’s of pet owners get to grips with their pet’s overall health and wellbeing.

Now in its 7th Year, Operation TransPAWmation is designed to help dog and cat owners identify and make small changes that can help improve their pet’s overall health and wellbeing.

For in-person support on your #PetmaniaOT journey, you can also drop into any one of our pet shops nationwide and speak with a member of our team.
