The Irish owned pet-retailer has surveyed over 1,700 pet-parents in Ireland as part of its annual Puppy of the Year competition. The survey has unveiled that across the nation, the top-five most popular names for man’s best friend are:

  1. Luna
  2. Teddy
  3. Riley
  4. Milo
  5. Bailey

Luna reclaims the top spot from Bailey last year, who has dropped to fifth. Teddy move up to second, with new appearances from Riley.

What Were the Less Common Puppy Names?

Whilst the list of entrants included the popular Nalas, Milos and Daisys, the poll showed a rising trend for names as Gaeilge with interesting Irish names like Bród, Tillí, Teidí, Cú Chulainn, Craoí, Nóinín, Saoirse, Óige, Séamus, Bó, Páidí, and Péig.

There were also many food inspired names that are sure to make you hungry, such as Peanut, Cookie, Teacake, Sushi, Fudge, Toffee, Nacho, Tayto, Honey, Taco, Oreo and Biscuit!

Lots of puppies were named after popular fictional characters, such as Kylo Ren, Leia, Yoda,Obi Kenobi (Star Wars), Dobby, Draco Malfoy, Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter), Frodo (Lord of the Rings), Arya (Game of Thrones), and Simba, Bambi, Nala, Pluto (Disney).

Many of the country’s new four-legged friends are named after celebrities, such as Elvis, Ringo, Bowie, Gigi, Einstein, Bundee Aki, and Bono.

Pet parents also gave a nod to different place names, like Rio, Cairo and Paris.

There has been a surge in more ‘human’ like names for pets, such as Larry, Declan, Noel, Martina and Kevin.
