Playing with your Guinea Pig

Guinea pigs are curious, playful creatures, who love exploring and spending time with their favourite humans. Daily simulation and interaction, but when done correctly, can provide a lot of fun and enjoyment for the whole family. By interacting and playing with them, it can really help build your bond and bring you closer to your beloved piggie.

In this blog post, we’ll talk about some of the best games to play with your guinea pig, what toys we recommend, and tips for playtime.

How to Play With Your Guinea Pig

1.Treasure Hunt

Make playtime and feeding time fun for your guinea pig by scattering his favourite treats around his cage, creating a treasure hunt for him. This game will help stimulate your guinea pig both mentally and physically, prevent boredom, as well as being a fun game you can both play together. Your pet will have to sniff to find his food, keeping him happy and occupied. If you want to give your piggie more of a challenge, scatter some food in tunnels or behind his toys.

2. Obstacle Course

Building your furry friend a mini obstacle course is the ideal way to spend some quality time together while also appealing to your guinea pig’s natural curious instincts.

There are lots of ways to make a hamster obstacle course; create a maze for your guinea pig from old toilet rolls to scoot through, hiding some tasty treats within for him to find. After that, he can test his balancing skills with the TRIXIE Suspension Bridge.

3. Races

Does your guinea pig come when called? If you have more than one guinea pig, this makes for a great game. Start off by building a racetrack—it can be as simple or as complicated as you like! Use playpen walls that won’t fall on your guinea pigs as the racetrack. Place your guinea pigs at one end and you walk to the other end and call their names, or show them their favourite treat. If you have one guinea pig, try timed trials to see how fast your piggie can go!

Tips For Playtime

  1. Wash your hands before and after playtime.
  2. Handle your guinea pig very gently and with lots of care. Don’t overhandle them.
  3. Keep any play area secure so they can’t escape.
  4. Always ensure playtime is supervised.
  5. Know your guinea pig’s personality, and never force them to do something they may appear uncomfortable with. Let them approach you first!
  6. Never scold or shout at your guinea pig if they nip or bite; simply put them back in their cage.
  7. Always make sure they have access to fresh food and water.
