The covid-19 pandemic has seen a soar in the demand for an extra family member in Irish households. The pandemic has surpassed Christmas as a time to get new pets and hundreds of local families have introduce a new furry friend. Have some pet-owners taken on a bit more than they can chew?

 Getting a new puppy is a big responsibility. The reality of returning to work and school it can be overwhelming for new pet families. To help integrate a new furry friend into the family, Petmania are relaunching its free monthly Puppy Care Classes with everything you need to know to care for, feed and protect the wellbeing of your new dog.

The Puppy Care Classes are designed for those who recently got or who are about to get, a new puppy. The classes cover a range of topics including diet and nutrition, grooming, house training, parasite control, exercise and play, socialisation and most importantly  basic behaviour training plus much more to ensure the best for your new best friend. Each attendee will get a free giftbag worth over €30 from SEVEN Dog Nutrition.

Petmania are following strict government guidelines to ensure the safety of the staff and pet owners attending classes including a reduced capacity to facilitate social distancing.

  • Only one person per family may attend with the puppy however a one-to-one with a dog’s family may be recommended at an alternative time if required.
  • Attendee chairs will be positioned at two-metre distance from each other and sanitized before and after class.
  • All attendees must wear face-coverings as will Petmanina staff and sanitiser will be provided in-store.

Whilst pets have a very positive effect on human health and well-being, but also should be remembered a pet is for life not only for a pandemic. Recent research carried out* revealed that almost a quarter of people who purchased a dog during lockdown in Ireland collected their dog on the same day they first inquired about the animal, highlighting a “click and collect” culture around the sale of dogs. To ensure that new pets acclimate to their new home properly pet experts recommend training for both puppy and parent.
