How To Look After Your Cockapoo’s Coat
Cockapoos are a delightful cross of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle breeds, and are known for being friendly, outgoing and loving pets. They have low-shedding, curly coats, so regular grooming is essential for their well-being and to maintain their coat’s healthy appearance. In this blog post, I will share some top tips and expert advice on grooming your Cockapoo to ensure they stay happy, healthy, and looking their absolute best.

Equipment Needed
Slicker brushes have thin bristles and are great for keeping your pet’s coat free of mats and tangles. They come in different types, so make sure to choose one that’s right for your pet’s age or breed. For example, a soft-tipped slicker brush is recommended for puppies because their skin is delicate, and a SAFARI Flexible Slicker Brush for adults.
Another essential grooming tool is the comb. Many pet owners have combs at home, and they’re suitable for all long-haired dogs or cats. After using a slicker brush, combing through a pet’s fur is a great final step to make sure there are no knots or tangles left.
Next up is the massage brush. It’s perfect for short-haired or thin-haired dogs and cats, especially when their fur is damp. The brush not only massages them, stimulating their oil glands, but also helps them relax and get used to grooming.
Grooming Your Cockapoo At Home
Regular brushing in between grooms is crucial for preventing mats and tangles in your Cockapoo’s coat. Aim to brush your pup everyday, using a slicker brush like a Slicker Brush, which gently removes mats, tangles and loose hair. With regular use, these high-quality slicker brushes will also reduce shedding for a healthy coat and home. Don’t forget to brush the legs, ears, muzzle and head too, as these are areas of friction-many people only brush the body and a result can cause matting in other areas.
I recommend to brush one small section of your Cockapoo’s coat at a time, lifting up that section of coat. Ensure you’re not just brushing the top of the coat, but brushing right through from root to tip (starting with the tips and working downwards if there’s any matting present).
If you’re unable to see all the way down to your dog’s skin when parting their hair, then their coat needs more detangling. Once they’ve been given a brush over, use a narrower-toothed metal comb to gently work out any tangles that weren’t removed by brushing.
Bathing your Cockapoo can be done every four to six weeks, or as required. Be sure to use a gentle dog shampoo that’s suitable for their coat type. To make bath time easier, you can brush your pup’s coat before getting them wet to remove any loose hair, knots and tangles.

Common Problems With Cockapoo’s Coat
- Pay attention to your Cockapoo’s ears, as they are prone to ear infections due to their floppy ears. Clean them regularly with a good ear cleaner.
-
Keep your Cockapoo’s nails trimmed to prevent them from becoming too long and causing discomfort.
-
Monitor your Cockapoo’s skin for any signs of irritation, redness, or inflammation, which could indicate an underlying health issue.
