How to Take Care of Your Goldendoodle’s Coat

Goldendoodle are adorable, friendly, and loyal companions. Their low shedding is great for those who may suffer from allergies but means extra care when it comes to doodle grooming because they combine poodle and retriever traits in their coats, which can vary in texture and length. In this blog post, I will share some top tips and expert advice on grooming your Goldendoodle to ensure they stay happy, healthy, and looking their absolute best.

Equipment Needed

Slicker brush

Slicker brushes have thin bristles and are great for keeping your pet’s coat free of mats and tangles. They come in different types, so make sure to choose one that’s right for your pet’s age or breed. For example, a soft-tipped slicker brush is recommended for puppies because their skin is delicate.

Comb

Another essential grooming tool is the comb. Many pet owners have combs at home, and they’re suitable for all long-haired dogs or cats. After using a slicker brush, combing through a pet’s fur is a great final step to make sure there are no knots or tangles left.

Undercoat Rake

Undercoat rakes remove dead, fuzzy undercoat yet leave the top coat shiny and healthy. Make sure to pull the rake in the direction of the coat growth. For best results, use this brush 1-2 times a week for 10 to 20 minutes each session, depending on your dog’s coat condition.

Grooming your Goldendoodle at Home

Goldendoodle have a variety of coats – thick, curly, or wavy – which are prone to become tangled and knotted, leading to messy mats if not brushed and combed regularly. Therefore, regular grooming is important to keep them looking and feeling their best, and it’s an excellent way to bond with your pet.

A quick run over with a slicker will make your doodle’s coat look soft and fluffy. While slickers are great at finding your doodle’s mats, they aren’t great at untangling tham. That’s where the metal comb and grooming rake come into play. A metal comb works best for curly coated doodles while a grooming rake may work well for wavier coated doodles.

Bathing

Doodle can collect a lot of debris in their coat, especially if they’re outdoorsy and active. Begin by wetting your dog thoroughly. Use lukewarm water and apply a mild, dog-specific shampoo. Massage it into the coat and be gentle around the eyes, ears, and face. Rinse your pooch with plenty of lukewarm water to remove all shampoo residue.

Common Issues with Goldendoodle’s Coat

  • The symptoms of allergies in Goldendoodles can manifest in several ways, such as excessive itching and scratching, licking or biting their skin, red, inflamed skin and even hair loss. Closely monitoring your Goldendoodle for any signs of allergies and consulting your veterinarian promptly is the best way to go.
  • Since the Poodle hair can make its coat susceptible to tangles and knots, it’s imperative to brush your Goldendoodle regularly. Frequent brushing and the use of a detangling spray can prevent mats from forming in your Goldendoodle’s fur. Start from the ends and gently work your way up to avoid pulling and discomfort.
