Grooming an Afghan Hound

Hair type: They have thick, silky hair, that is very fine in texture; the Afghan Hound’s coat is a sort found among animals native to high altitudes. They can come in all colours; but the silky coat is most often the colour of sand, with a darker face and ear fringes.

Daily coat care: The long, thick coat demands a great deal of attention. Bathe the dog when necessary. Do not brush in between baths in order to keep coat long and shiny. Brushing a dry coat will damage the coat and even make it more easily matted. Weekly baths are not as important if your Afghan is a pet; but doing so will make the coat less matted and will save you time in the end. Many wear snoods indoors to protect their ears from food bowls. Some owners like to use a special air-cushioned brush called a pinbrush. This breed is an average shedder.

Recommended groom frequency: This dog breed requires very regular grooming ; and should be seen by a professional groomer at least once every 4-6 weeks.

Diet

Afghan Hounds tend not to be fussy eaters; however choosing a high quality dry dog food is recommended to ensure they receive the right balance of nutrients to maintain their overall health; and in addition to keep their skin and coat in a good condition. Depending on your Afghan’s age and size, you can expect to feed between 215g and 295g of dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Activity Level

The Afghan Hound is relatively inactive indoors, but it does need lots of daily exercise like long walks and jogs to keep them healthy. They need large open spaces to play and run. This breed is an extremely fast runner so never should be left alone in an unsecured area. Their living area should be securely fenced, as they love to be outdoors but prefer to sleep indoors.

Where to get an Afghan Hound

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
