All about the Basset Hound
The Basset Hound is a gentle breed that will chase a scent vigorously if not on a leash and have a frequent digging habit so proud gardeners – look out!
They are an extremely friendly breed that love to play with children and will often spend the whole day enjoying a good romp in an open are.
When left alone they can become very noisy and will bark until they get their owners attention. They are very easy to train because if their willingness to be obedient and please their owner and make great companion dog.
Grooming a Basset Hound
Hair type: The short-haired coat of a Basset Hound is long, smooth and soft and sheds constantly.
Daily coat care: The smooth, short haired coat is relatively easy to groom. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush and shampoo only when necessary. Wipe under the ears every week and trim toenails regularly. This breed is a constant and heavy shedder.
Recommended groom frequency: Basset Hounds should receive a professional grooming every 10-12 weeks. Their ears and eyes may require more frequent attention.

Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Basset Hound, you will need to feed between 290g and 381g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. Keep your Basset Hound trim by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time.
Prone to weight gain and obesity, particularly as they become older, it is important to choose a well balance food, and restrict the availability of treats. Your Basset Hound’s diet may also need to change as s/he gets older.

Activity Level
To keep the Basset Hound healthy, it should be given plenty of exercise, including a long daily walk to keep the dog mentally stable, but discourage it from jumping and stressing the front legs. This breed will run and play by the hour when given the chance.
Because of their keen noses they tend to roam when they pick up a scent so take care when off lead that the dog is in a safe, secure area. When they pick up a scent they may not even hear you calling them back as their complete focus will be on finding the source of the scent!
Where to get a Basset Hound
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
