All about the Border Terrier
The Border terrier is a playful dog and typically known to be excellent with children and other dogs.
An agile and obedient breed, they are a natural hunter, so caution is recommended when around smaller pets such as guinea pigs, rabbits and cats.
A real people pleaser; they are very easy to train although they can be slightly reserved with strangers and has a tendency to bark, which makes the breed a good watchdog.
The border terrier can be very afraid of loud noises and develop a timid attitude if not accustomed to them at an early age.
Grooming a Border Terrier
Hair type: They have a double coat consisting of a short, dense, soft undercoat and harsh, wiry weather resistant, close lying outer coat with no curl or wave. The coat comes in red, grizzle and tan, blue and tan or wheaten.
Daily coat care: The durable, wiry coat needs to be brushed weekly using a slicker brush and professionally groomed twice a year. They shed little to no hair and is good for allergy sufferers. Bathe only when necessary.
Recommended groom frequency: A Border Terrier should be fully groomed twice a year, although intermittent washing, nail clips and ear cleans are recommended.

Diet
Depending on the age and weight of your border terrier, he will need to be fed between 40g and 177g of good quality dry dog food each day. As with all dogs, treats should be given as occasional treats rather than all the time, in order to prevent weight gain.

Activity Level
The Border terrier is an active breed which needs lot of daily exercise. Daily walks are essential to make the dog healthy both physically and mentally. These need to be supplemented with jogging or running in an open but secure area to release the excess energy of the dog.
Where to get a Border Terrier
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
