Grooming a Corgi

Hair type: Corgis have a double coat with a short, thick, weather resistant undercoat and a longer, coarser outer coat. Coat colours include red, sable, fawn, black and tan, with or without white markings. There are often white markings on the legs, chest, neck and parts of the muzzle.

Daily coat care: The soft, medium length, water resistant coat is easy to groom. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush and bathe only when necessary. The coat is shed twice a year.

Recommended groom frequency: Corgis should be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks.

At Petmania Grooming Studios we have a full range of treatments available for your Corgi. If you get puppy, we recommend our Puppy’s First Visit at around four months, once your puppy has received all his vaccinations.

Diet

The Corgi has an insatiable appetite and will eat continuously if food is available, so careful control of their diet is important to prevent weight gain and associated illnesses.

Choose a dry dog food which offers a well balanced nutritious diet, and feed only to the recommended amount at set feeding times. Give treats as treats choose functional treats to help prevent weight gain.

Activity Level

The Corgi is a very active dog which needs daily exercise to keep it fit and prevent weight gain. Interactive games that involve running and activity are recommended to help keep your Corgi fit, active and entertained.

With enough exercise your Corgi will be calm indoors, but will become active and disruptive without it.

Where to get a Corgi

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
