All about the Jack Russell

The Jack Russell Terrier is a wonderfully obedient, cheerful and intelligent dog which is quite fearless.

Generally friendly, the Jack Russell will react if continually teased or pulled at and for this reason aren’t great with young children.

The Jack Russell loves to play and explore and is naturally inquisitive. They are an incredibly intelligent dog that learn very quickly what they are allowed to do and will readily take advantage of any leeway given to them.

Grooming a Jack Russell

Hair type: Their coat is smooth without being so sparse as not to provide a certain amount of protection from the elements or undergrowth. It can also have a rough or broken coat without being woolly.

Daily coat care: They are quiet a heavy shedder and should be combed / brushed regularly using a firm bristle. If you have a rough or broken coated Jack Russell then a stripping comb is a great help in plucking your dogs dead hair.

Recommended groom frequency: Your Jack Russell should be professionally groomed every 6 weeks.

At Petmania Grooming Studios we have a full range of treatments available for your Jack Russell. If you get puppy, we recommend our Puppy’s First Visit at around four months, once your puppy has received all his vaccinations.

Diet

They are generally healthy dogs, and although prone to some ailment, with a well balanced diet they will remain healthy. Active dogs, if they do not get enough exercise they will gain weight, so a carefully managed diet with a regular feeding schedule and regular exercise is recommended.

Choosing the best dog food for your dog may be a little daunting with so many options available, but our pet care advisors are instore to assist you.

Activity Level

The Jack Russell Terrier is a pleasant companion when it is sufficiently exercised; however if it does not get enough, it may become a nuisance. It needs to be taken on a long, daily, brisk walk. In addition, he will be in his glory with space to run, hunt and play. If the Jack is left alone during the day, be it in an apartment or a house, it should be well exercised before the human leaves for work by taking it on a long walk or jog, and then taken out again when returning home.

Where to get a Jack Russell

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
