All about the Lhasa Apso
The Lhasa Apso is an intelligent and a friendly breed and if properly trained and socialised gets on very well with other pets and children.
It can make for an excellent watchdog as it has a great sense of smell and hearing. Given the playful and alert nature of the breed, it makes for a good companion breed too.
The major downside of the Lhasa Apso is that it is prone to small dog syndrome which can make it snappy and sometimes very difficult to handle and manage. However, with proper training and guidance, this breed can be a fantastic companion for the whole family to enjoy.
Grooming a Lhasa Apso
Hair type: The Lhasa Apso dogs have a dense double coat that is straight and long over the entire body including over the head and eyes, reaching to the floor. They can come in any colour. Puppy coats often change colours as the puppy matures into an adult.
Daily coat care: The long coat parts at the spine and falls straight on either side. No trimming or stripping is needed although when in full coat they need to be brushed about once a day with a pin brush and an extra gentle slicker brush to keep their coats from matting. Some owners opt to cut the coats short for easier grooming. Dry shampoo as necessary. Check the feet for matting and for foreign matter stuck there. Clean the eyes well as they tend to tear. This breed is an average shedder.
Recommended groom frequency: This breed of dog can be particularly difficult to maintain. It should receive a professional groom every 4-6 weeks with particular attention to eyes, ears and feet pads.

Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Lhasa Apso, you will need to feed between 178g and 235g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. Keep your Lhasa Apso trim by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time.

Activity Level
The Lhasa Apso is a moderately active breed and a daily walk will help take care of the emotional and developmental needs of the dog. An occasional romp is an open area is good to release the extra energy of this breed in a safe manner. These dogs are good for apartment living. They are very active indoors and will do okay without a yard.
Where to get a Lhasa Apso
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
