All about the Wheaten Terrier

The Wheaten Terrier is a happy, strong and playful terrier that loves playing with children and will get along well with other dogs. These dogs have a puppy attitude that remains with them throughout their lives making them sweet-tempered, docile and self-confident.

The Wheaten Terrier is a very intelligent breed of dog that can learn quickly throughout its life but would be easier to train when younger. They can be a problem around cats if it not thought from an early age that it is not to chase after them.

This breed makes a great watchdog as they are very alert and will bark at strangers that approach their house.

Grooming a Wheaten Terrier

Hair type: The Wheaten Terrier has a single, wavy coat that comes in many shades of wheaten. Puppies are born dark brown and lighten to the final adult wheaten colour by age two. There are two coat varieties, the American and the Irish. The Irish coat tends to be thinner and silkier.

Daily coat care: When grooming the soft coated wheaten terrier, the object is to achieve a natural look and so using a brush is not recommended as this will make the coat fuzzy. Frequent, even daily combing with a medium toothed comb is recommended to keep it free of tangles. Bathe or dry shampoo when necessary. The Wheaten does not shed in the Spring or Autumn but loose hair needs to be removed from the coat from time to time during these periods.

Recommended groom frequency: Wheaten Terriers should be groomed professionally every 6-8 weeks.

At Petmania Grooming Studios we have a full range of treatments available for your Wheaten Terrier. If you get puppy, we recommend our Puppy’s First Visit at around four months, once your puppy has received all his vaccinations.

Diet

Depending on the size and age of your Wheaten Terrier, you will need to feed between 215g and 283g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Our pet advisors in-store can help you find the most appropriate food for your dog, while you can find out more about the different dog food brands we stock here.

Activity Level

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier can get by with moderate exercise as long as it is taken for daily walks. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is good for apartment life. These dogs are moderately active indoors and a small yard will do. This breed does not tolerate heat very well.

Where to get a Wheaten Terrier

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
