The Different Types of Parasite Control for Pets

Fleas, ticks and worms are all nasty creatures that cause health issues in your pet if left untreated. Each parasite comes with it’s own risks and complications, some more serious than others. For example, a heavy worm infestation can cause your pet to be thin and unwell. Some of these illnesses can spread to humans, like Lyme Disease which can accumulate after your dog or cat is exposed to a tick.

There are lots of different medications available for your pet. Some are preventative treatments, meaning they will stop your pet from being infected with a parasite, while others are designed to treat a pet that has already become infected.

Preventative Flea & Tick Treatment

Spot-on Flea and Tick Prevention

You can normally protect your pet from Fleas and Ticks using the same treatment. A spot-on is normally applied to the back of the neck every 4 weeks that will make your pet a hostile rather than comfy place for these nasty parasites to live.

Spot-ons containing Fipronil, which is a controlled mediation, will kill fleas and ticks will give your pet the best possible protection.

Fleaway Plus Flea & Tick Treatment for dogs kills fleas, ticks & biting lice stops development of flea eggs, larvae and pupae in the home.It can be used in puppies over 2kg / 8 weeks old and is safe for pregnancy and lactation dogs.

At Petmania we stock a number of different options to protect your dog or cat from intestinal worms. These treatments will typically treat roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms, although this does vary between products so we do recommend double checking before you buy. If your dog has lungworms, an Zerofen is recommended, although you may also need veterinary assistance.

Available in both liquid and tablet form, worming treatments will both kill and prevent future infections and usually a preventative treatment every 3 months is sufficient to keep your dog or cat protected.

Natural Treatments for Fleas and Ticks

There are a number of treatments for fleas and ticks that we stock that offer natural protection from Fleas and Ticks. These include the TICKLESS collar attachment which is an ultrasonic device used to repell fleas and ticks from your pet.

Treating Your Pet’s Bed and Home

If your dog or cat gets fleas, it is really important that you treat not only your pet, but also the spaces in which they live. Fleas can live on soft-furnishings including beds, sofas and carpets and can jump from pet-to-pet or even onto you, so treating your whole house will be essential to ensure they are full removed. Using a room fogger or spray can offer your home protection for up to six months and should be used in conjunction with regular treatment for your pet.
