All about the Beagle
The Beagle is an independent, loyal and very intelligent breed of dog. This breed takes very well to children and is friendly with other dogs.
Due to his hunting nature he is will be aggressive towards small animals so care should be taken around smaller pets.
This dog is very affectionate and will love the whole family and enjoy their company equally as much. The beagle’s bark is strange sounding in comparison to other dogs and sounds more like a howl than a bark.
Grooming a Beagle
Hair type: A Beagle has a short haired coat which is close, hard, sleek and relatively easy to care for. Any hound types of colouring can be found on a Beagle including lemon, tricolour, black and tan, red and white, orange and white or lemon and white, blue tick and red tick.
Daily coat care: The Beagle’s smooth short haired coat is easy to look after. Brush with a firm bristle brush and bathe with mild soap only when necessary. Dry shampoo occasionally. Be sure to check the ears carefully for signs of infection and keep the nails trimmed. This breed is an average shedder.
Recommended groom frequency: Beagles should receive a professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.

Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Beagle, you will need to feed between 159g and 209g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. Keep your Beagle trim by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. Beagles can become overweight so choosing a well balanced food with the right nutrients, and restricting availability of treats is recommended.

Activity Level
Energetic and possessing great stamina, the Beagle needs plenty of exercise, including a brisk daily walk. It should have a fenced yard of reasonable size to romp in. Always use a lead when walking this breed or you will be running the risk of it disappearing in search of wild game.
Where to get a Beagle
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
