All about the Newfoundland
Although the Newfoundland can be quiet large and look somewhat intimidating, it has an intelligible manner and a calm disposition.
Newfoundlands are excellent around children and will love they attention that they will get from kids. It is not an aggressive dog but will be extremely loyal to its family and owner and will protect them if they feel there is a threat. This trait makes it an excellent watch dog.
Although this breed trains well and gets along with other dogs and pets, it must be trained and socialised at an early age when it is a more manageable size.
Grooming a Newfoundland
Hair type: Newfoundlands have a double coat that is flat and water resistant. The oily outer coat is coarse and moderately long, either straight or wavy. The undercoat is oily, dense and soft. Newfoundlands that live indoors tend to lose their undercoats.
Daily coat care: Daily to weekly brushing of the thick, coarse, double coat with a hard brush is important. The undercoat is shed twice a year in the spring and autumn and extra care is needed at these times. Avoid bathing unless absolutely necessary as this strips away the coats natural oils. Instead dry shampoo from time to time.
Recommended groom frequency: Newfoundlands should be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks.

Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Newfoundland, you will need to feed between 525g and 690g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Activity Level
A long walk every day is essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. This breed loves to swim and so occasional swim helps to maintain their innate talent. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. This dog is comfortable with cold weather and sensitive to hot weather, so care should be taken when taking them out.
Where to get a Newfoundland
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
