All about the Alaskan Malamute
The Alaskan Malamute is one of the most intelligent and loyal of all the dog breeds. It is extremely affectionate to its master and is great with children and family pets.
Because of their tendency to be very friendly, even towards strangers; they are not a good choice as watch dogs.
This breed prefers to live outdoors but still needs a lot of attention and companionship to feel fulfilled. It can sometimes be difficult to train this breed for certain tasks; but their willingness to please their owner means that more often than not, they will react well to training.
Grooming an Alaskan Malamute
Hair type: The Alaskan Malamute has a dense double coat comprised of the woolly undercoat and the longer guard hair. This double coat of hair serves as an insulator to protect it from extremely low temperatures. The outer guard coat is slightly oily so it can repel dirt. The shorter undercoat protects it from the wind and the cold. The coat comes in a range of light grey to intermediate shadings of black sable; and shadings of sable to red.
Daily coat care: This dog has a dense coat that should be brushed twice a week using a pin brush; in addition to a narrow and wide tooth comb to get at hard to reach spots and remove dead hair. This breed sheds heavily and the undercoat comes out in clumps twice a year. Bathing is most unnecessary as the coat sheds dirt readily. Dry shampoo occasionally.
Recommended groom frequency: An Alaskan Malamute should be professionally groomed every 8-12 weeks; and may need more attention during shedding periods.

Diet
Depending on the age, size and activity level of your Alaskan Malmute; you can expect to feed between 300g and 500g per day, divided into two meals.

Activity Level
Malamutes need a reasonable amount of exercise which includes long daily walks. But be careful not to overdo it in warm weather; their coat can cause them to overheat quiet quickly. However, it is an active breed which can be destructive if left indoors for too long; which therefore highlights the importance of exercise fulfillment with this breed.
Where to get an Alaskan Malamute
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland; but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home; and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder; and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
