All about the Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is a friendly breed with a charming disposition making it them on of the most popular dog breeds in Ireland.
These well mannered dogs have high energy levels and are very playful and affectionate making them wonderful pets. Bichon’s are prone to sudden bursts of energy which are accompanied by frantic running and growling, which can be amusing to look at.
The Bichon Frise is excellent with kids and with other pets also although they love company and need a lot of human attention. Leaving it alone for too long can lead to behavioural problems.
Grooming a Bichon Frise
Hair type: A Bichon Frise has a fluffy coat made up of two layers. The outer coat is wavier and slightly coarser than the silky smooth undercoat. Their hair grows quite quickly and is prone to matting requiring a disciplined grooming regime.
Daily coat care: Your Bichon’s hair must be brushed daily to prevent knotting and matting. Use a slicker brush and a 7 inch combination comb, which is ideal for lifting the coat and removing any small tangles. Some hair trimming may be required between grooms.
Recommended groom frequency: Bichons should be professionally groomed every 4-5 weeks.

Diet
The Bichon Frise is prone to sensitive skin, so choosing a food that has been especially formulated to contain additional nutrients to combat this is recommended. Depending on the food you choose, and your dog’s size / age you will need to feed your Bichon between 40g and 177g a of dry dog food each day.

Activity Level
This breed is known to have high energy level and requires regular exercise to stay fit. A walk at least once a day is necessary for a healthy temperament. Like other small dogs, these too have a tendency to put on weight. They love to eat. However, moderate potion sizes one to two times a day is sufficient to meet their dietary requirement. It is advisable to subject them to socialization at an early age, as they can get a little snappy at times.

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
