All about the Kerry Blue Terrier
The Kerry Blue Terrier is a fun-loving and friendly breed. It is good with kids as well as friendly with strangers.
Caution is advised with smaller pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs etc. because of the dog’s strong hunting instincts.
This breed can be dog aggressive if not socialized from a very young age although it is an obedient breed and can be very easy to train. However, the training schedule should be constantly changed to keep it interested at all times, as it can get bored of routine.
Grooming a Kerry Blue Terrier
Hair type: The coat of the Kerry Blue is seen by most as its key feature. It is soft and wavy with no undercoat. The texture is similar to that of fine human hair and like human hair, does not shed but continues to grow throughout the year. Coat colours include black to very dark blue, shades or tinges of brown to different shades of blue gray.
Daily coat care: Kerry Blues should be brushed once a week with a soft brush and comb. Bathing and combing every week keeps them clean and without proper care their beard will get smelly and packed with food and dirt. They shed very little and are considered good for allergy sufferers.
Recommended groom frequency: A Kerry Blue should be given a professional groom at least once every 6 weeks.

Diet
Depending on its age and activity level, your Kerry Blue will need to be fed between 160g and 220g of good quality dry dog food a day, divided into two meals. To prevent weight gain, choosing a food which offers a good nutrient balance and restricting availablility of treats in recommended.

Activity Level
This is an active breed which needs lot of daily exercise. Daily walks are essential to make the dog healthy both physically and mentally. These need to be supplemented with jogging or running in an open but secure area to release the excess energy of the dog. However, it should not be let off the leash in an open area as it has a tendency to chase small animals. Kerry Blues are good for apartment life. They are fairly active indoors and a small yard will do.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
