All about the Rottweiler
The Rottweiler is a powerful, calm, trainable, courageous and devoted to its owner and family. They are loyal and protective and will defend their family at all costs and can seem vicious if they are doing so.
This dog can be very strong and hard to handle so they need an owner who is strong minded and able to handle a large dog. Any training with this dog needs to be undertaken when the dog is young and manageable and it needs a lot of leadership and socialization.
As long as these dogs are trained well and socialised at an early age, they will get along fine with other animals and dogs and will enjoy playing with children. Friends and relatives of the family are normally enthusiastically welcomed, but if a Rottweiler feels threatened they will react.
Rottweilers are listed as restricted breeds in Ireland as part of the Control of Dogs Regulations 1998.
Grooming a Rottweiler
Hair type: The Rottweiler’s coat consists of an outer coat and an under coat. The outer coat is of medium length, coarse, dense and flat. The under coat should be present on the neck and thighs and must not show through the outer coat. Rottweilers living in hot climates may have acclimatised and may be missing the under coat.
Daily coat care: The smooth and glossy coat is relatively easy to groom. Brush with a firm bristle brush and bathe only when necessary as it will remove the natural oils of the coat. This breed is an average shedder
Recommended groom frequency: Rottweilers should be groomed professionally every 8-10 weeks.

Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Rottweiler, you will need to feed between 364g and 480g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Activity Level
The Rottweiler needs plenty of exercise. You can’t give these robust dogs too much work or exercise; they thrive on it. They need to be taken on a daily walk or jog. Running in the woods and in open country makes them very happy and they have no desire to wander from you. Swimming or running beside a bicycle are perfect activities for this dog and it also loves retrieving a ball.
Where to get a Rottweiler
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
