All about the Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier receive a lot of bad press but in reality they are loving and devoted dogs that are eager to please their owners and can sometimes get very clingy.

They are an intelligent breed that are easy to train. This breed make excellent watchdogs and will do whatever it takes to protect their family and home. Early socialization is a must with this breed as they can be very dog aggressive if not introduced to other dogs and pets at an early age.

They are a very athletic dog that needs a moderate amount of exercise to be kept happy and healthy. Staffies are notorious chewers and a good supply of chew toys are needed to keep these dogs interested and to stop them from chewing on other household items.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a restricted breed listed on the Control of Dogs Regulations 1998.

Grooming a Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Hair type: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a smooth coat that is tight and clings to the body giving the dog a streamlined appearance. They are coloured brindle, black, red, fawn, blue, white or any blending of these colours with white. White with any colour broken up over the body is known as pied. Liver coloured, black and tan dogs can occur but are rare.

Daily coat care: The smooth, short haired coat is easy to groom. Brush every day with a firm bristle brush and bathe or dry shampoo as necessary. The coat will gleam if rubbed with a piece of towelling.

Recommended groom frequency: Because the coat is an easy to care for coat, it doesn’t need professional grooming on a regular basis. Staffordshire Bull Terriers need to be groomed professionally  once every 2-3 months.

At Petmania Grooming Studios we have a full range of treatments available for your Staffordshire Bull Terrier. If you get puppy, we recommend our Puppy’s First Visit at around four months, once your puppy has received all his vaccinations.

Diet

Depending on the size and age of your Staffordshire Bull Terrier, you will need to feed between 188g and 247g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

Our pet advisors in-store can help you find the most appropriate food for your dog, while you can find out more about the different dog food brands we stock here.

Activity Level

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier possesses tremendous stamina and must have plenty of exercise, which needs to include a daily walk or jog.

Where to get a Staffordshire Bull Terrier

There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.

However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
