All about the Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie, is a small yet energetic and brave breed of dog. They are great companion dogs that require little exercise to be fulfilled and are considered as a great watchdog as they will bark when they feel that something is not right.
These dogs are fairly easy to obedience train, but like many toy dogs, housetraining can be difficult.
This breed is very possessive of things such as food and toys and can be very dog aggressive if not socialised from an early age. They do make good family pets, but care must be taken with small children due to the very small size of this dog.
Grooming a Yorkshire Terrier
Hair type: A Yorkshire Terrier has a long, silky coat that falls to both sides. A standard cut will see a Yorkie’s hair kept long, however, a shorter cut is also popular. While they do not shed much hair, their hair does grow quite quickly and longer hair is prone to knotting and matting.
Daily coat care: If keep his hair long, your Yorkie will need to be brushed daily, however shorter coats will require brushing only once or twice a week. A soft slicker brush will remove dead hair and help keep your Yorkie’s from becoming dry, which can lead to hair loss.
Recommended groom frequency: Longer coats will need to be groomed weekly, while shorter coats are recommended to be groomed at least once every 8 weeks.
At Petmania Grooming Studios we have a full range of treatments available for your Yorkshire Terrier. If you get puppy, we recommend our Puppy’s First Visit at around four months, once your puppy has received all his vaccinations.
Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Yorkshire Terrier, you will need to feed between 124g and 163g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. Choosing a well balanced food will help maintain your Yorkie’s coat condition (in addition to regular grooming), as well as its overall health.
Our pet advisors in-store can help you find the most appropriate food for your dog, while you can find out more about the different dog food brands we stock here.
Activity Level
Active little dogs, the Yorkshire Terrier will require a moderate walk each day, although interactive play will take care of a lot of their exercise needs. If your Yorkie zooms around the house like a speeding bullet, it is a sign that he needs to go on more/longer walks. They will also enjoy a good romp in a safe, open area off lead, such as a large, fenced-in yard.
Where to get a Yorkshire Terrier
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
