All about the Bearded Collie
A Bearded Collie is a very lively and cheerful breed of dog. Its even temper and willingness to play make it a great companion dog for children.
Generally good with other dogs as well as other pets, the Bearded Collie can however bark incessantly and has a tendency to very wary of strangers.
This dog can be difficult to train as it loves to play around and can be very mischievous so a firm approach is required to train this breed and obedience training is recommended in order to get the right behaviour out of this dog.
Grooming a Bearded Collie
Hair type: Bearded Collies have a shaggy waterproof, double coat that hangs over the entire body, including the chin. Beardie pups are born black, blue, brown or fawn, with or without white markings and often lighten, fist fading to a light gray or cream as the dog matures. The coat colour changes several times before it reaches the adult colour. The final coat colour is somewhere between the puppy coat colour and the colour of the coat when the dog is a year old.
Daily coat care: Daily brushing of the long, shaggy coat is important. Mist the coat lightly with water before you begin. Tease out mats before they get bad and give extra attention when the dog is shedding. Bathe or dry shampoo as necessary. It is difficult to locate ticks in the thick undercoat so check regularly. This breed is an average shedder.
Recommended groom frequency: Bearded Collies can be difficult to manage and their coat can get matted very easily. They should be professionally groomed every 3-4 weeks.
At Petmania Grooming Studios we have a full range of treatments available for your Bearded Collie. If you get puppy, we recommend our Puppy’s First Visit at around four months, once your puppy has received all his vaccinations.
Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Bearded Collie, you will need to feed between 267g and 351g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. Keep your Bearded Collie trim by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. Bearded Collies can be prone to developing food allergies, so it is important to monitor your dog’s reaction its food.
Our pet advisors in-store can help you find the most appropriate food for your dog, while you can find out more about the different dog food brands we stock here.
Activity Level
Bearded Collies are an active breed which needs a lot of daily exercise. Daily long walks should be supplemented with running and jogging in an open but safe area, to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. Leaving your Bearded Collie alone for too long can result in destructible behaviour.
Where to get a Bearded Collie
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
