All about the Bedlington Terrier
Despite its appearance, the Bedlington Terrier is a brave and courageous breed of dog. They make for a good watchdog as it has a tendency to bark and is wary of strangers.
If socialised well at a young age, the Bedlington Terrier will live happily with children and other dogs, however, caution is advised around dominant dogs, as the Bedlington Terrier will fight and won’t allow itself to be dominated.
It is an obedient breed which makes it easy to train and it makes for an excellent companion breed.
Grooming a Bedlington Terrier
Hair type: The Bedlington has a thick double coat of a mixture of hard and soft hair standing out from the skin. Colours come in blue, sandy, liver, blue and tan, sandy and tan, and liver and tan. Tan markings may appear over the eyes, on the chest, legs and rear.
Daily coat care: The coat of the Bedlington can be extremely hard to care for and keep in good condition. Although the dog sheds little to no hair it does require regular clipping. Although frequent bathing will not dry out skin as it does on so many other breeds, it should not be washed too often or the coat will become lank, which is not considered appropriate for the breed.
Recommended groom frequency: Bedlington Terriers should receive a professional groom every 6 weeks, sometimes it may require more frequent grooming.

Diet
Depending on the size and age of your Bedlington Terrier, you will need to feed between 134g and 177g of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. Keep your Bedlington Terrier trim by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time.

Activity Level
The Bedlington Terrier is an active breed which needs lot of exercise. Daily long walks are recommended for optimum physical and mental development of the breed while interactive play is also recommended. However, when out in the open, your Bedlington Terrier should not be let off the leash as it has a tendency to chase small animals.
Where to get a Bedlington Terrier
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
