All about the Chow Chow
The Chow Chow is a quiet mannered dog but it has a very dominant instinct that can become a problem if not dealt with at an early age so early socialization is strongly recommended.
However, with strong guidance and firm training they are a well behaved dog that can learn tricks very easily and responds well to obedience training.
Because of its strong dominant nature it is not recommended for first time owners or owners who think they might not be able to handle its nature.
Grooming a Chow Chow
Hair type: The breed is known for a very dense double coat that is either smooth or rough. The fur is particularly thick in the neck area, giving it a distinctive ruff appearance. The coat may be red, black, blue, cinnamon/fawn, or cream. The breed is distinguished by its unusual blue-black/purple tongue and very straight hind legs, resulting in a rather stilted gait. The bluish colour extends to the Chow Chow’s lips; this is the only dog breed with this distinctive bluish colour in its lips and oral cavity.
Daily coat care: Regular brushings of the long coat is important to maintain the lifted, standing-out look. You should use a medium/coarse steel comb and a slicker brush when grooming your dog. This breed is a seasonal heavy shedder and extra care is needed when the dog is shedding its dense undercoat. Dry shampoo when necessary.
Recommended groom frequency: A Chow Chow should receive a professional grooming every 6-8 weeks and may require more frequent visits during shedding periods.

Diet
What type of diet does this breed need?
Depending on the size, age and activity level of your Chow Chow, you can expect to feed approximately 275g and 325g a high-quality dog food daily, divided into two meals.

Activity Level
The Chow Chow is not a very active breed. However, a long walk daily is necessary for emotional and developmental needs of the dog. It is sensitive to hot weather so care should be taken when taking them out. The Chow Chow will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. It is relatively inactive indoors and a small yard is sufficient.
Where to get a Chow Chow
There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100’s of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them.
However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.
