The Benefits of Mud Therapy and Canine Massage for Dogs

We know you usually want to keep your dog out of the mud, but if you have a dog with itchy, flaky, or inflamed skin, a mud therapy or treatment bath might be the right way to go.

Mud therapy and treatments are formulated to rejuvenate, cleanse, and protect your dog’s skin and coat, leaving your not only feeling amazing, but looking amazing too. Combined with a gentle canine massage and your dog won’t ever want to leave the bath!

In this blog, I will talk about the benefits of mud therapy and canine massage, and what treatments are available here in Petmania Grooming Studio.

 What is Mud Therapy and what are the benefits?

The first line of defence with every dog is its skin, which is why it’s important that it is protected. The most common skin conditions we see in dogs are caused by having dry, flaky skin. This is where mud and clay therapy can really come into play.

Mud contains small granules of dirt and clay combined with water. When massaging mud onto your dog’s skin, these small granules of dirt eliminate any dead or dry skin, leaving behind only soft, fresh skin. Once you have exfoliated your dog’s skin, his newer skin can be treated and conditioned with oils and moisturisers.

The mud therapy will also help relax and ease any stress your dog may be experiencing; this is especially beneficial for those nervous or anxious dogs and often provides relief for them.

What is a Canine Massage?

A canine massage can provide a wide range of physical and psychological benefits for your dog, leaving them feeing relaxed, at ease, as well as lowering anxiety and stress. Canine massage therapy also includes increased oxygenation, relief from pain, improved joint flexibility, as well as miscellaneous benefits to the immune system.

If you have a sporty or very active dog, a massage can help with mobility issues, or if they are recovering from surgery. If you have a senior dog, a canine massage can provide relief from muscle tension, soreness, discomfort from arthritis and hip dysplasia through a release of endorphins.

In addition, canine massages can provide emotional well-being for your pet. They are known to calm hyperactivity, anxiousness, and nervousness.

What Treatments are Available?

At Petmania Grooming Studios, our three main treatments that include canine massage therapy are;

Skin Soothing Therapy Bath & Styling

In this groom, we perform a rich clay therapy massage that combines the natural healing properties of aloe vera, lavender and witch hazel which instantly eases irritation and itching. The aloe vera has natural healing properties that sooths and promotes skin regeneration, and the witch hazel has strong anti-oxidant and astringent properties which promotes healing and reduces inflammation, which is useful for dogs that suffer from hotspots.

Muscle & Joint Therapy Bath & Styling

This is perfect for very sporty dogs, or for those with post-op injuries or mobility issues. A gentle, rhythmic canine massage infused with peppermint and menthol, will soothe aching joints and muscles; increasing blood flow and flushing toxins from the body.

De-shedding Therapy Bath & Styling

Using a special massage technique this natural, hypoallergenic treatment will clear blocked hair follicles; loosen your dog’s undercoat and give the skin underneath a nourishing moisture boost. In addition, they will receive a full de-shedding brush-through using our specialised tools; and a high velocity blow dry to remove any lingering hairs from the undercoat. Therefore, this will leave your dog cooler, lighter and more refreshed than ever!
